Richard Se Biography

 

Richard Se, is a Singaporean photographer, who has travelled the world in pursuit of his favourite subjects - unique buildings, interesting places of interest and exquisite monuments. He captures them through the eyes of an architect.

Richard completed his architectural studies at the National University of Singapore in 1996. He worked as an architect from 1996 to 1999, His knowledge in architecture influenced him in seeing the environment through his camera lens. In 2000, after a brief practice in architecture, he decided to pursue his other passion, which is photography. Over the years, he had opportunities photographing some of the most unique and beautiful resorts around the world. He had worked closely Adrian Zecha, founder of the Aman Resorts, and also the late Jaya Ibrahim, photographing and documenting Jaya’s international architecture and design projects in Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Mexico.

Richard has accumulated a body of photography work that that goes beyond architecture, monuments and destinations to include people, fashion and culture. Richard’s celebrity portraiture and fashion shoots had appeared in international publications. He had also opportunities to photograph some of the world’s most unique and beautiful luxury resorts including Amangiri and Amanjiwo.

When he is not on assignment, Richard explores on his own to less traveled places to photograph his favourite subjects, capturing life (and still life) with his favourite camera, the Hasselblad X2D 100C.

In 2019, Richard was awarded Bronze in the People/Culture category in the Tokyo International Foto Awards with his work “Painted Faces” which is a series of pictures taken in Ethiopia. The award is curated by eminent photographers in the likes of Kenro Izu. In the same competition, he was also awarded an Honorable Mention for his Portfolio and three other photographs: “Golden Wat Xieng Thong”, “Villagers in Ethiopia” and "Saffron and Gold”. Regretfully, his winning entries which were scheduled for exhibition by the organiser in 2020 in Tokyo, Japan was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seeing Borobudur: Lalita Vistara Reliefs is Richard’s debut photographic book, published by Oscar Riera Ojeda Publishers. It marks his lifelong admiration for and a 17-year dedication to photographing Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It will be available worldwide by September 2023.
